Abstract

This study is on the effect of boko haram insurgency on the educational development of Nigeria student. The total population for the study is 200 residents of selected local government in Borno. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made village heads, students, youths and married men were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

Education is under attack, as incidents of violence against students, teachers, union, schools and government officials are on the rise worldwide and in Nigeria in particular. Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, deliberate threat against students, academics, teachers and education facilities create barrier to accessing quality education for all. Education is a right, like the right to have proper food or roof over ones head. Article 26 of the 1996 universal declaration of human right states that, “everyone has the right to education”. Education is not only a right but passport to human development. It opens doors and expands opportunities and freedom. It contributes to fostering peace, democracy and economic growth as well as improving health and reducing poverty. The ultimate aim of education for all (EFA) is sustainable development. The education for all movement is a global commitment to provide quality education for all children, youth and adults. It aims to achieve six key education goals by 2015, which relates to: early childhood care, primary education, youth and adult learning, literacy, gender and education quality. In the year 2000, the world’s government adopted the six EFA goals and eight millennium development goals (MDGs), the two most important frameworks in the field of education. The education priorities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are shaped by these objectives. The two sets of goals are an ambition roadmap for the global community including Nigeria to follow. They offer a long term vision or reduce poverty and hunger, better health and education, sustainable life styles, strong partnership and shared commitments. Considerable progress has been made since the world’s leaders committed to achieving education for all by 2015. Within the space of a decade, the number of out-of-school children has dropped by more than 38 million and the gender gap in formal education has been narrowed. Literacy rates have also increased, albeit slowly (EFA Global Monitoring Report, 2011). The current Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria is threatening to halt or even reverse this progress. Education is under attack in northern Nigeria. Since the beginning of 2012, according to Amnesty International’s research, about 70 teachers and over 1000 school children have been killed or wounded. About 50 schools have either been burned or seriously damaged and more than 60 others have been forced to close. Thousands of children have been forced out of schools across communities in Yobe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Borno states. Many teachers have been forced to flee for their safety to other states. The highest number of attacks was in Borno state in the North-east. According to the Nigeria teachers’ union, more than 1000 teachers have been forced to flee from areas in the north since 2012. Based on this backdrop of adverse effect of Boko Haram on education for all (EFA) in Nigeria, one is inclined to ask the question; how can Nigeria at the peak of Boko Haram insurgency arrive at EFA objectives by 2015 barely seven months from now?

 

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Well Nigeria as a nation has suffered in recent times, these hazards has affected almost every part of Nigeria especially the northern part of Nigeria. The made every effort trying to find out the best way to resolve this issues of crises from all part of the country as these has effect on the growth and development of the Nigeria economy. The research study tried to find out the major causes why the boko haram cannot be stopped. It was discovered that these group of people have sponsors from some members of staff federal government of Nigeria.

  • OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To determine the effect of boko haram insurgency on educational development in Nigeria
  2. To determine the roles of the federal government policy towards improving the education in Nigeria
  3. To investigate the effect of unemployment on the level of crises in Nigeria.
  4. To ascertain the relationship between book haram insurgency and educational development.

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

H0:   there is no effect of boko haram insurgency on educational development in Nigeria

H1: there is effect of boko haram insurgency on educational development in Nigeria

H02: there are no roles of the federal government policy towards improving the education in Nigeria.

H2: there are roles of the federal government policy towards improving the education in Nigeria

 1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research work gives a clear view on the re-orientation of the masses especially in the Northern part of Nigeria on the importance of education, it also discuss the roles of the federal government policy on the academic performance of the student. The study will also highlight the factors affecting the level of academic performance among students in Nigeria. It will also reveal the responses of the respondents on the effect of level of unemployment on the level of crises in Nigeria. Finally the student will reveal the effect of bombing on the academic performance of students in Nigeria.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers the effect of book haram insurgency on the educational development of Nigeria student. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

  1. a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
  2. b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
  3. c) Organizational privacy: Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

INSURGENCY:  is a rebellion against authority when those taking part in the rebellion are not recognized as belligerents

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Educational development is a growing and vibrant field, defined as: “helping colleges and universities function effectively as teaching and learning communities” (Felten, Kalish, Pingree, & Plank, 2007, p. 93)

 

1.8 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows

Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study. Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.  Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study
