Abstract
The cost of not proof reading or proper gatekeeping ranges from the death of the print outfit, life of journalists, editor, publisher, jail term or fine. The research therefore, examined the impact of proofreading and editing in print media with a study of Nigerian Tribune. The paper is anchored on gate keeping theory and libertarian media theory. Cross sectional survey research method was adopted while simple random sampling was used to select 200 respondents within Nigerian Tribune newspaper. Also, the data collection instrument is questionnaire which was administered face to face while the data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency percentage and tables). From the finding, it is clear that gatekeeping determines the quality of the media output or messages. If the gatekeepers perform well, the integrity and reputation of the media will be sustained.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- Background of the study
Editing and proofreading are essential aspects of effective writing. However, they are the later steps in the ongoing process of brainstorming, planning, drafting, and revising. Writers who rush or ignore any of these earlier steps can end up with a paper that is unclear, underdeveloped, and very difficult to correct in the later stages of the writing process. When you are ready to proofread and edit your draft, you should do so carefully and thoroughly. (http://writing.umn.edu). Content is important. But like it or not, the way a paper looks affects the way others judge it. When you’ve worked hard to develop and present your ideas, you don’t want careless errors distracting your reader from what you have to say. It’s worth paying attention to the details that help you to make a good impression. Most people devote only a few minutes to proofreading, hoping to catch any glaring errors that jump out from the page. But a quick and cursory reading, especially after you’ve been working long and hard on a paper, usually misses a lot. It’s better to work with a definite plan that helps you to search systematically for specific kinds of errors. Sure, this takes a little extra time, but it pays off in the end. If you know that you have an effective way to catch errors when the paper is almost finished, you can worry less about editing while you are writing your first drafts. This makes the entire writing process more efficient. Try to keep the editing and proofreading processes separate. When you are editing an early draft, you don’t want to be bothered with thinking about punctuation, grammar, and spelling. If you’re worrying about the spelling of a word or the placement of a comma, you’re not focusing on the more important task of developing and connecting ideas(http://writingcenter.unc.edu)
News editing is the journalism craft that involves news processing and packaging. It is a crucial part of the editorial process in which editors convert news reports and illustrations into packaged information. News editing gives direction and meaning to the mass of text and art provided by reporters, photojournalists and graphic artists. News editing involves selecting copy for publication, editing selected copy, designing news pages for newspapers, magazines, websites, etc. News editing is an outstanding part of the editorial process because it is the stage that prepares the sole newspaper product (i.e., information) for the consumer. If the press rolls out copies of thrash, the newspaper is well on its way to death. Editors ensure that stories are well-written and complete, without offending ethical and legal standards. When copy editors go to work, they bring with them editing skills. The first of those skills, of course is thinking along with the writer. Writers edit as they write. Editors write as they edit. Editing and writing can hardly be separated. Even without being an editor, one understands the need for editing. First, any written work can be improved upon. In addition, journalists work at great speed, and they can muddle things up in the rush to beat deadlines.
- STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Editing and proofreading are essential aspects of effective writing. Writers who rush or ignore any of these earlier steps can end up with a paper that is unclear, underdeveloped, and very difficult to correct in the later stages of the writing process. When you are ready to proofread and edit your draft, you should do so carefully and thoroughly. News editing is an outstanding part of the editorial process because it is the stage that prepares the sole newspaper product. On this background the researcher wants to investigate the impact of proofreading and editing in print media.
- OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The objectives of the study are;
- To ascertain the impact of proofreading and editing in print media
- To ascertain whether proofreading and editing meant to check errors and correct fault language in print media
- To ascertain how important are proofreading and editing in print media
- RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;
H0: there is no the impact of proofreading and editing in print media
H1: there is the impact of proofreading and editing in print media
H02: proofreading and editing does not meant to check errors and correct fault language in print media
H2: proofreading and editing meant to check errors and correct fault language in print media
- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study is very significant to students and the media especial print media. The study will give a clear insight on the impact of proofreading and editing in print media. The study will also serve as a reference to other researcher that will embark on this topic
- SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The scope of the study covers impact of proofreading and editing in print media. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;
- a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
- b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
- DEFINITION OF TERMS
PROOFREADING: Proofreading is the reading of a galley proof or an electronic copy of a publication to detect and correct production errors of text or art
EDITING: Editing involves making revisions to and suggestions about the content of a document. Editors must also pay attention to every word on the page; however, the types of changes an editor makes depend on whether the client requires substantive editing or mechanical editing.
PRINT MEDIA: Print media is one of the oldest and basic forms of communication. It includes newspapers, weeklies, magazines, monthlies, banners & graphics, posters and other forms of printed material. The contribution of print media in providing information and transfer of knowledge is remarkable.
1.8 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows
Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study. Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding. Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study
This material content is developed to serve as a GUIDE for students to conduct academic research
