Abstract

Adolescence as an season of life interesting to observe or experience, is characterized by and synonymous to puberty; beginning at the end of childhood, and spanning the entire teenage years. At puberty, adolescence maturation indices falsely projects adolescents as jointly maturated, ready to participate in rights accorded adults, including sexual rights. On the contrary, adolescence is better viewed as a growth period ofthe human sexual 01gans, and human sexuality, among others; in preparation toward adulthood, rather than a developmental stage in lifespan when teenagers’ body should be cheaply sexually explored and exploited, be. ( sexual rights are accorded its victim. Ironically, the average adolescent already-saddled-with-conflicts, seeking to cope with the psychological impact of the changes at that developmental period is vulnerable to premature initiation into unwholesome sexual activities, and sexual activeness, resulting into additional complexities.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

The adolescent need adult support, this is why the developmental stage, adolescence, coincides with educational exposure at High School, College, and/or Higher Educational Institution, a stage when guidance and counseling is still needed, as well as received, prior to and towards adulthood. Human adults need to understand the adolescents’ make up (and so be able to prevent conflicts) Evbuoma (20 11) or help manage them when the set in). Adolescence is the developmental stage at which adolescents’ development is characterized by turbulence, owing to conflicts that have arisen from complexities resulting from response of the adolescent to abrupt/sudden changes initiated by hormones in his/her body. As a result, the adolescent is easily and often vulnerable to confusion, anger, and frustration, owing to mood swings; often needing adult help, and clarification on own perceptions, and impressions. However surprisingly, they outwit and out think the adult, having great analytical skills; this also due to accelerated hormonal activity, altering their cognitive capabilities. Early adolescence remains an overlooked window of opportunity for public health intervention with girls and boys in subSaharan Africa. Minimal health data exist on pubescent girls and boys. Considerable morbidity and mortality related to HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy emerge soon after puberty, suggesting the importance of targeting early adolescents. The fundamental goal ofprimarypreventionwould be better served if girls and boys between the ages of 10 and 14 years were targeted for effective and contextually relevant interventions. Such interventions should address healthy transitions to young adulthood to effectively advance the public health agenda with post pubescent (aged15to24years) young women and men. The global health community is overdue to build the empirical database for intervention with this age group. . In a global arena with limited health funding, the focus of public health is rightfully on those populations with the highest risks of morbidity and mortality. However, growing awareness about the rising mortality among youths, with increased risks for both girls and boys as they move from early to late adolescence, suggests a need to reexamine our priorities.1,2 The fundamental goal of primary prevention would be better served if girls and boys between the ages of 10 and 14 years those experiencing the early changes of puberty were targeted for effective and contextually relevant intervention. Interventions should address younger adolescents and healthy transitions to young adulthood to more effectively advance the public health agenda with older, post pubertal (aged 15 to 24 years) young women and men

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A small body of literature on puberty has emerged from a few countries in the region and provides important information, including the recent set of analyses conducted in South Africa indicating a declining age of menarche among urban girls; the largest running and longest longitudinal birth cohort study in Africa, also conducted in South Africa (the 1990 Birth to Ten to Birth to Twenty cohort); and a series of process and impact evaluations and randomized trials of school and community-based interventions in both South Africa and Nigeria has emphasized on adolescent health risks. It is in view of the above that the researcher intend to investigate the influence of puberty on adolescent academic administration in southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa.

  • OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of puberty on adolescent academic adjustment in southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa state; but to aid the completion of the study, the researcher intends to achieve the following specific objective;

  1. To examine the effect of puberty on the academic adjustment of student
  2. To ascertain if there is a significant relationship between puberty influence and academic performance
  • To examine the role of parent in counseling the student on the influence of puberty changes
  1. To ascertain the impact of puberty on the health of adolescent
    • RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

The following research hypotheses was formulated by the researcher to aid the completion of the study;

H0: puberty does not have any effect on the academic adjustment of student

H1: puberty does have an effect on the academic adjustment of student

H0: there is no significant relationship between puberty influence and academic performance

H2: there is a significant relationship between puberty influence and academic performance

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is believed that at the completion of the study, the findings will be of great importance to management of secondary school as the study will help them explore the changes that comes with the adolescent stage. The study will also be useful to researchers who intend to embark on a study in a similar topic as the study will serve as a reference point to further study, finally, the study will be of great importance to students, teachers, lecturers, academia’s and the general public as the study will add to the pool of existing literature and also add to the existing knowledge bank

  • SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers the influence of puberty on adolescent academic adjustment in southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa state. But in the cause of the study, there are some factors that limit the scope of the study;

  1. a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
  2. b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
  3. c) Finance: Limited Access to the required finance makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities.

1.7 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

Puberty

Puberty is the process of physical changes through which a child’s body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction. It is initiated by hormonal signals from the brain to the gonads: the ovaries in a girl, the testes in a boy.

Academic adjustment

Academic adjustments are modifications in how students participate in classes and activities. These modifications allow students to meet standards, but do not change them. Academic adjustments give students equal access to the educational opportunities of the University

ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows. Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (background of the study), statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope of the study etc. Chapter two being the review of the related literature presents the theoretical framework, conceptual framework and other areas concerning the subject matter.     Chapter three is a research methodology covers deals on the research design and methods adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.  Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study.
