Abstract

This study is on influence of animated cartoons on the behaviourial development of children in Ikeja City. The total population for the study is 200 staff of selected primary schools in Ikeja City. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made headmasters, teachers, non teaching staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

 CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the study

Childhood as a stage in the human life cycle encompasses a period of phenomenal biological, physiological, psychological, and social growth. Between infancy and the beginning of adolescence, about age twelve, the human acquires major life skills the ability to walk, talk, read, care for one, and come to know the world around him or her. During this time, the child first encounters the major agents of socialization:  the family, peers, schools, and media.  Children is the future as we knows, their right behavior that can be accepted by social were established in family, communities and sociality. The child now is very different with the several years ago. It’s the real problem to the parent, teacher and government for handling that was a serious public problem in many socialites around the world, one of the main causes was media influence. (Saman Gnangsanit, 1999 p.29)  The children in common society will be easy to accepting influence from environment and they have good memorize to do anything because of stimulant. The brains can help to learning and doing anything. It’s transforms to be their negative lifestyle and copy-cat behavior (Dr. Pang Shinnapong, Oct  2004) Children will be view violence as an acceptable way to settle conflicts. (Congressional Public Health Summit, 2000).Therefore, the “terms” animation and cartoon have been associated with lively and usually humorous images set in motion. According to Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary (2001) Defines animation as giving life or liveliness to something and while, the word cartoon is refers to the sketches or drawings similar to the ones we have seen in newspapers. When these words are combined to animated cartoon they refer to a “motion picture consisting of a sequence of drawings, each so slightly different that when filmed and run through a projector the figures seem to move” (Random House, Inc.,2001, p. 82) The popular animated cartoons channels are: Nickelodeon, Child Smille, BabyTV, Animaux, Cartoon Network, Jimjam  e.t.c and they are now available on cable tv such as Startime, Dstv, Gotv e.t.c. Similarly, some of the popular cartoons are: Dragon Ball Z, Fruits Basket, The Simpsons, Futurama, Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas, Tarzan, Tom and Jerry and Spider-Man e.t.c while of these cartoons are shown at the cinema hall such as Ikeja City Mall. It is against this background that the research examined the influence of animated cartoons on the behavioral development of children who watch animated cartoons at the Ikeja City Mall. With the view to know how cartoon influence the learning skill of children, affect the socio-cultural behaviours of children, what are the role play by parents on the cartoon viewing habits of their children.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Children are voracious and unselective viewers of television who spend a considerable part of their free time in front of television sets. Cartoons, the kiddie‟s niche have become an integral part of their day-to-day life. It is baby sitter, companion and an important agent of socialization for children. Also adults use cartoons as a pacifier and as a means to inspire children to eat. Watching cartoon is a highly passive activity, too. With less outdoor activities and social interaction, children are more exposed to cartoon. This is a worldwide phenomenon. Cartoons in these conditions are bound to have its tremendous impact on children, both in terms of how many hours and what they watch on television. One might say, oh that’s ridiculous! Cartoon is harmless; it just entertains. But observing a cartoon watching child exhibits a real phenomenon. When children are glued to the small screen, it is virtually impossible to divert their attention away from cartoons. The cartoon characters jump, dive and fall from very high heights and then land without being harmed. These sorts of cartoons display a false sense of reality upon children. At a young age, this false sense of reality can really affect them. Though cartoons are thought as entertaining, they have a positive as well as negative influence on children depending upon the theme and the content. Some cartoons are neutral and purely meant for entertainment, some are educational but some are violent to the core. It can be educative like “Popeye the Sailor Man” which actually inspired a whole generation of American children to willingly eat their spinach. Cartoons are also violent to the core. Psychological research has found that televised violence has numerous effects on the behaviour of children. These include the imitation of violence and crime seen on television (copycat violence). Three major effects proven by psychological research are that the child may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others; children who watch violence do not fear violence nor are they bothered by violence in general and the children are more likely to become aggressive or use harmful actions towards others. This means cartoons with violence will be unhealthy for a child. As a result, a tremendous amount of childhood involvement with cartoons can limit social interaction and may obstruct the development of brain‟s social systems. To minimize the potential negative effects of television, it’s important to understand the impact cartoons have on children. How much impact cartoon has on children depends on many factors: how many hours they watch, the content they watch, their age, gender, personality, socio – economic status, whether they watch alone or with adults, peer pressure and whether their parents talk with them about the cartoons that they watch and so on

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To ascertain the influence of animated cartoon on behavior development of children
  2. To find out whether children do actually understand the Message of animated cartoon
  3. To determine whether children should be encouraged or  discouraged from watching cartoons
  4. To make reasonable recommendations on the children and cartoon selection.

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

For the successful completion of the study, the following research hypotheses were formulated by the researcher;

H0: there is no influence of animated cartoon on behavior development of children

H1: there is influence of animated cartoon on behavior development of children

 H02: children do not actually understand the Message of animated cartoon

H2: children do actually understand the Message of animated cartoon

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study cannot be underestimated as it is of very significance not only to children who watch cartoons but also in many respects. First, parents and significant other will find the research findings very useful, as they will be better opportune to be selective of the kinds of cartoons their wads watch.  Again it will serve as a reference point for other researches on the effect of cartoon advert on children. Finally the findings of this research work will help children be aware of the positive and negative implication of the cartoons they watch.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study covers influence of animated cartoons on the behaviourial development of children in Ikeja City. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

  1. a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study
  2. b) TIME: The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.
  3. c) Organizational privacy: Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Cartoon: It is a pictorial parody which by the devices of caricature analogy and ludicrous juxtapositive sharpens the public view of a contemporary event, political or social trend.

BEHAVIOURIAL DEVELOPMENT: Behavioural development is an essential survival tool, whereby experience modifies the way we interact with our environment. Over a lifetime, brain biology, behaviour and environment interact and influence each other to determine an individual’s overall development.

1.8 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows

Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study. Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature. Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study. Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.  Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study
