ABSTRACT
The research study investigated and identified the factors responsible for the declining standard of Secondary Education in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara state. A self-developed questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. It was discovered that in adequate number of qualified teachers and professional teachers is responsible for the declining standard of education. Other factors are: Lack of proper guidance to the students by the concerned authority on the procedure of writing examination, in adequate of recommended text books, lack of school laboratories, and lack of school library. It was suggested that government should provide adequate well-trained and professional teachers, allow teachers to go for in-service training for the development of their skills, encouragement of teachers for the participating in WAEC and NECO marking panels, enough instructional materials should be provided, they would enhance good performance and bring about declined standard.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1Â Â Background to the study
There has been a growing interest in recent years over the performance of students in Nigerian schools and this has generated a lot of concern about standard of education in the heart of many people.
Ukeje (1976) defined education as a process a product and discipline. He maintained that, as a process education is responsible for both the transmission and transformation of the cultural heritage of a people; as a product, it can result in constructive and destructive tendencies and as a discipline, it is concerned with what to teach, how to teach, and the purpose of teaching. Education is a continuous process of learning which begins at birth and continues till death.
A comparative study of the educational development of yester – years and that of contemporary time would portray that there is a great disparity as regard the performance of student at the secondary school level in the past and present. The market is difference in the poor quality and student academic performance in the present day secondary schools in general perfective is seen in education field as the declining in standard of education.
1.2Â Â Statement of the Problem
Education in Nigeria has been identified as one reliable way to move the country forward. This is business all sectors of the economy needs knowledge to thrive and be better. Knowledge is paramount in anything the country is considering doing. As individuals, education brings awareness to us. Awareness of our environment, skills, abilities and the needs to be solve. Education helps in personal development, as a matter of fact, personal development is a function of education. Develop countries like Singapore, UK, United States of America, Russia and so on invest heavily on research. This is to increase knowledge and find solution to the pressing needs of the country. Nigeria on her part, has not fully followed this attitude. Nigeria has invested less in education and thus is lacking the dividends of education. However, the Nigeria economy has a system of education which is believed to help her citizens get improved and become better. Nevertheless, within a period of time, the country has witnessed a decline in the aspect of secondary school education. The students which ought to be trained and tutored are left to trained themselves, thereby turning to different cadres of vices in the country. It is against this background that this study is undertaken to assess the factors responsible for the decline of secondary school education.
1.3Â Â Research objectives
The study has the following aims:
- To identify the factors responsible for the decline of secondary school attendance especially in the Zamfara state.
- To determine the economic implication of decline in the attendance of secondary school by young people.
- To recommend ways to curb this situation.
1.4Â Â Research Questions
The study seeks to address the following questions:
- What are the factors responsible for the decline of secondary school attendance in Zamfara state?
- What are the economic implications of decline in attendance of secondary school students?
- What are the achievable ways for curbing the decline in secondary school attendance?
1.5Â Â Research hypotheses
H0: There is no relationship between the decline in secondary school attendance and some school management factors.
H1: There is a relationship between the decline in secondary school attendance and some school management factors.
H20: There is no economic implication of the decline in the attendance of secondary school students in Zamfara state.
H21: There is an economic implication of the decline in the attendance of secondary school students in Zamfara state.
1.6Â Â Significance to the Study
This study help us to understand the factors responsible for the decline in the attendance of secondary school in Zamfara state. It further enlightens us on the economic implications as well as the social consequences.
1.7Â Â Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is limited to Education as a field of study and a sector in the economy. Also the study encompasses ideas, thoughts and recommendations from several authors and researchers in the country and beyond.
1.8Â Â Limitation of the Study
The following are the limitation that hinders the study of this research work;
Financial Constraint: There are not enough funds to fuel the study of this research work. The researcher has access to a very little source of fund.
Time Constraints: Due to the limited time available to carry out this research work, it is not possible to carry out the research extensively as anticipated by the researcher.
1.9Â Â Organization of the study
The study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with the study’s introduction and gives a background to the study. Chapter two reviews related and relevant literature. The chapter three gives the research methodology while the chapter four gives the study’s analysis and interpretation of data. The study concludes with chapter five which deals on the summary, conclusion and recommendation.
