ABSTRACT

This project is a Social network that integrates biometrics as means of authentication. This research work proposes a strong argument for the use of biometrics as factor of authentication for social websites, ensuring that only authorized individuals can access critical data and also make it possible to trace and apprehend malicious users or criminal elements using the popularity of Social media as means of communication, to carry out their vices. Social network that rely on user names and passwords alone, as the trend currently is, may be providing access to sensitive information, personal data, private communication or online activities to unauthorized individuals. By adding a biometric layer of security using your unique fingerprint, only authorized individuals can gain access to critical websites, networks and web-based applications asdeployed in this research work. The Social network is a web application developed using PHP, CSS, MYSQL as a relational database and Java for the biometrics layer. Object Oriented Analysis and Design Methodology (OOADM) was used to develop the system and Unified modeling language (UML) was used to model the software.

Chapter 1:

Introduction

1.0 Introduction

Typical social network authentication strategies rely on passwords, which can be shared, lost, phished, or hacked. Social network that rely on user names and passwords alone, as the trend currently is, may be providing access to sensitive information, personal data, private communication or online activities to unauthorized individuals.

The majority of all websites are protected by user names and passwords only. Online banking or investment sites, Internet auction sites, credit related sites, social networking sites and the list goes on. By adding a biometric layer of security using  your unique fingerprint, only authorized individuals can gain access to critical websites, networks and web-based applications. Recent studies and countless reports reveal the need for stronger security measures. Consumers and busi- nesses of all sizes are replacing less secure and convenient methods of authentication with biometrics. There was a time when biometrics was too difficult to deploy and too expensive to consider. Those times are gone [1].

This research work proposes a strong argument for the use of biometrics as factor of authentication for social websites, ensuring that only authorized individuals can access critical data and also make it possible to trace and apprehend malicious users or criminal elements using the popularity of Social media as means of communication, to carry out their vices.

1.1 Statement of the Problem

In the course of the research, the following problems were identified;

1.   There is no unique means of authentication or verification of an individual accessing a social network.

2.   There is the possibility of losing or forgetting passwords, which can be stressfull and time consuming.

3.   Sharing, losing, phishing, or hacking of passwords can allow unauthorized persons or individual gain access to personal data, private communication and online activities.

4.   A single user can own several accounts with several disguised or false identity.

1.2 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this research work is to enhance social network security by integrating biometric authentication.

The objectives include to develop a system that can:

1.   Design a social website that will make use of fingerprint authentication as a unique access to user account.

2.   Add to the alternative procedures of retrieving an account due to lost or forgotten password.

3.   Prevent unauthorised access to users account and online activities.

4.  Identify, trace and apprehend cyber criminals, using social media as means to perpetuate or carry out their evil activities.

1.3   Significance of the Study

1.   This work addresses the issues of security on social network as it makes it possible to bring to book the black eggs on social networks.

2.   It is also ensure a safer and friendlier social network for business men, government functionaries, public stake holders, celebrities and the general users.

3.   The project makes it impossible for unauthorised users to get access to the accounts of social network users.

1.4   Scope of the Study

This study enhancing social network security by integrating biometric authentication is restricted to social network security by adding another level of authentication to the existing use of password and username. The biometric authentication used in this study is also restricted to fingerprint data capture in the course of registration and authentication for access to user account.

1.5   Limitation of the Study

The limitation encountered in the course of this work includes the following:

1.   Unavailability of biometric device with the available PC used, therefore there was need to outsource the fingerprint scanner used for the work, this caused delay and financial constraint.

2.   There was the issue of interoperability of the fingerprint device with all browsers with the social network developed, for this work we were limited to the configuration of the fingerprint scanner software development kit to Mozilla Firefox browser.

3.   There was financial constraint in the course of this research that prevented the work from been hosted on the world wide web, the developed social network was hosted on a local host and tested to see its operability and efficiency when deployed on the Internet.
