Abstract

This study was on achieving good paragraphing in essay writing. Three objectives were raised which included: To find out the important of paragraph in writing skill among Provo girls senior high school, to find out the effect of paragraph in essay writing among Provo girls senior high school and to find out whether paragraph is the major weakness of student in essay writing among Povo girls high school. In line with these objectives, three research questions and hypotheses were formulated and answered. The total population for the study is 150 selected Povo girls high school. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The study recommended that developing paragraph writing skill is highly significant to students of any major. Hence, they will submit their school and college assignments in a standard way

 

Chapter one

Introduction

1.1Background of the study

The building blocks of documents is paragraphs. Many students use length to define paragraphs: a paragraph is a group of at least five sentences, a paragraph is half a page long, and so on. In actuality, a paragraph is defined by the unity and coherence of ideas among phrases. “A set of sentences or a single sentence that constitutes a unit” is how a paragraph is defined (Lunsford and Connors 116)The length and look of a portion in a paper do not indicate whether it is a paragraph. For example, in some writing styles, particularly journalistic forms, a paragraph might be as short as one sentence. A paragraph is, in the end, a statement or a set of sentences that support one major concept. This will be referred to as the “controlling notion” in this handout because it directs the rest of the paragraph.

Writing dates back thousands of years. People used to write on cave walls, stones and on various other things which were used instead of paper. About 3,500 years ago, the idea of alphabet came into practice. It is also worth mentioning that there was even the concept of communication in languages when there wasn’t the idea of writing. Since writing is considered to be one of the productive skills of a language. Hence, different languages use different systems of writing. At the meantime, different languages also use different writing styles. For instance, the English writing organization style is quite simple which has a beginning (introduction), a middle (body) and an end (conclusion) while the writing style is circular in which the writer doesn’t want to mention the topic to his/her readers. Instead,  writers tend their readers to be imaginative enough. Moreover, the Arabic writing style is repetitive, and this makes it more interesting for readers while the same repetition theory is boring if it is done in English writing. Therefore, there is always emphasis on to avoid repetition. It is also important to note that one writing style isn’t better than another, just as one language isn’t better than another. To be a successful writer in any language, you need to learn the writing style in addition to words and grammar rules (Boardman, 2008; Boardman & Frydenberg, 2008)

You must first decide on an argument and a workable statement for your article before you can begin determining the composition of individual paragraphs. What is the most crucial message you want to get across to your audience? Each paragraph’s information must be relevant to that idea. In other words, your paragraphs should remind your reader that your thesis and the information in each paragraph have a recurring relationship.

Statement of the problem

After observing the weakness of students’ English writing skill existed in the Provo girls’ senior high particularly, the researchers felt the need to write an introductory paper on paragraph writing, which will help the students acquire basic and essential knowledge of paragraph writing, which they later can expand it to essay and other types of academic writing. The covers important topics such as the organization, format and kinds of paragraph, the writing process and the characteristics of writing.

Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To find out the important of paragraph in writing skill among Provo girls senior high school
  2. To find out the effect of paragraph in essay writing among Provo girls senior high school
  3. To find out whether paragraph is the major weakness of student in essay writing among Povo girls high school

Research question

  1. What is the important of paragraph in writing skill among Provo girls senior high school?
  2. What is the effect of paragraph in essay writing among Provo girls senior high school?
  3. Is paragraph the major weakness of student in essay writing among Povo girls high school?

Research hypotheses

The following hypotheses were formulated;

H0: there is no important of paragraph in writing skill among Provo girls senior high school

H1: there is important of paragraph in writing skill among Provo girls senior high school

H0: there is no effect of paragraph in essay writing among Provo girls senior high school

H2: there is effect of paragraph in essay writing among Provo girls senior high school

H0: paragraph is not the major weakness of student in essay writing among Povo girls high school

H3: paragraph is the major weakness of student in essay writing among Povo girls high school

Significance of the study

The study will be very significant to students and writers. The study will give a clear insight on the achieving good paragraphing in essay writing. The paragraph is the simplest and most basic form, a paragraph is a group of sentences about one topic. Paragraphs are the fundamental building blocks of texts. Their purpose is to inform, give an opinion, state facts or explain. An effective paragraph is logical and well structured and clear. With this the result of the study help student to know the important of paragraph. The study will also serve as a reference to other researchers that will embark on the related topic

Scope and limitation of the study

The scope of the study covers achieving good paragraphing in essay writing. The study will be limited to Provo girls’ senior high school.

Research of this type is limited by these problems:

  1. Time: Time factor is one of the limiting factor that affect this project work. That is the time limit allocated to complete this work is very short and does not allow for detailed investigation of the factors wanted by the researcher.
  2. Insufficient literature material: The greatest hindrance is the unavailability of sufficient literature material for this work to effectively carryout the research and this has been a major constraint to the researcher.
  3. Finance: In a project work like this, finance is one of the constraints that limit this research work. As a result of this, the researcher has to limit to available finance.
  4. Poor response of workers(respondents): The response of the people during the interview was very poor and they responded very poor to the questions asked to them, some are incompetent to speak on such issues on the question or they will wont the answer to such questions as they think it is confidential. With this information was not let out easily, these result created a lot of complexity in the are of gathering information and made it more difficult for the respondents in getting vital information for this project.
