BIOACCUMULATION OF NATURALLY OCCURING RADIONUCLIDES IN RICE AND SWEET POTATOE SAMPLES CULTIVATED IN SELECTED FARMLANDS OF KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT This study details the bioaccumulation of natural radionuclides in rice and sweet potatoes samples acquired from selected farmlands of Kebbi State. Ten (10) samples of rice and five (5) samples of sweet potatoes were collected from (15) different farmlands in Kebbi State and analyzed by means of Gamma-rays spectroscopy using Nal(Tl) detector. Activity concentration for 238U,232Thand40K, in soil sample from the rice farms ranged from, 10.19±0.5-19.56±1.98, 13.58±0.43-32.77±3.02 and 205.32±4.73-512.25±36.51Bqkg-1respectively,with ...

IDENTIFICATION AND ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY PROFILE OF METHICILLIN AND ERYTHROMYCIN RESISTANT Staphylococcus aureus FROM CLINICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES IN MINNA NIGERIA

ABSTRACT Methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is progressively increasing globally and has become a global health concern. Antibiotic susceptibility profile of Staphylococcus aureus was determined using disc diffusion method. A total of 21.9 % (73/360) from clinical and environmental samples tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in environmental samples was 24 % while it was 20.5 % in clinical samples. The age group 18 to ...

POSSIBLE TELECONNECTION BETWEEN THE INDIAN OCEAN DIPOLE (IOD) AND RAINFALL DISTRIBUTION OVER NIGERIA

ABSTRACT The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has some level of control over the weather of Nigeria and Africa seasonally but there has been enough debate as to the extent of the control. ENSO magnitudes do not necessarily translate into impacts in the same direction hence, attempt to investigate possible teleconnections with the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode Index (IODMI) phases over equatorial Indian Ocean that could explain the subsisting gaps ...

PHENOTYPIC AND GENOTYPIC VARIABILITY STUDIES ON SOME RICE GENOTYPES IN LOW LAND ECOLOGY OF NIGERSTATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT Variability has been known as a tool for any crop improvement programme. Yield improvement can be ascertained if there is enough variability existing in a population. Therefore, this study was conducted to asses morpho-agronomic variations in the lowland rice genotypes in an Alpha lattice design with three replications. The experiment was conducted at National Cereals Research Institute Badeggi and Edozhigi in 2017. Parameters such as Days to 50 % ...

EFFECT OF SPROUTING ON THE FORMULATION OF WEANING DIETS FROM BAMBARA NUT (Vigna. subterranean) AND SORGHUM (Sorghum bicolor)

ABSTRACT Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) accounts for over 50 % mortality among weaning children globally. Fortification and formulation had been used to supply some of the nutritionally deficient nutrients in diets of malnourished children. Sorghum is generally used as weaning foods in developing countries but is deficient in protein while Bambara nut is rich in protein and can provide the nutrients lacking in sorghum. This study focused on the effect ...
